  19. What's in the distribution?
  20. =======================================================================
  21. This distribution contains Voodoo Banshee drivers, control panel for 
  22. Windows 98. The DirectDraw portion of the drivers supports Direct3D 
  23. when using DirectX 5.0
  24.  
  25. NOTE: DirectX 5.0 or 6.0 redistributable files should be used with these 
  26. drivers!

  35. Requirements

  38. - Windows 95/98
  39. - PC with a Pentium, Pentium II, or Pentium Pro Processor and a free 
  40.   PCI slot
  41. - 16MB of RAM
  42.  
  43. Fresh Installation 
  44. ------------------
  45.  
  46. NOTE: Complete Steps 1 and 2 before removing your existing 2D card.
  47.  
  48. 1) Extract the files for the Voodoo Banshee driver to a directory.
  49. 2) Before removing your existing 2D card switch the video driver to 
  50.    Standard VGA. Click Start, Control Panel. Double-click on Display.
  51.  
  52.    Select 640X480 and 16 colors.  Accept the changes.
  53.  
  54. 3) Power off the system and remove your existing 2D card.
  55. 4) Install the Voodoo Banshee Card in a free PCI Slot
  56. 5) Power on the system and verify that video appears during post.
  57. 6) Start Windows in Normal mode
  58.  
  59.   (Once Windows starts you may be notified that no video device
  60.    exists, click Cancel if this message appears)
  61.  
  62. 7) Windows will detect a new VGA Compatible Display. You need to click
  63.    the Next Button on the Detection Dialog Box and in the "Specify a 
  64.    Location" field click the checkbox then enter the path to the Win98
  65.    directory in the drivers location.
  66.  
  67. 8) You may then be prompted to insert the Windows 95/98 Voodoo Banshee Driver Disk.  
  68.    Again, enter the path you specified in Step 1 and press OK.
  69. 9) Windows will copy the drivers. Reboot the system when prompted
  70. 10) Install DirectX 5.0.

  73. Upgrade Existing Voodoo Banshee Drivers
  74. --------------------------------

  76. 1) Start Windows 95/98
  77. 2) Extract the files for the Voodoo Banshee driver to a directory.
  78. 3) Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.  Double-click on Display.
  79. 4) Click the Settings tab then click "Advanced Properties"
  80. 5) Then under "Change Display Type/Advanced Display" click "Change"
  81. 6) Click "Have Disk" and enter the path specified in Step 2 plus
  82.    the Win98 directory.
  83. 7) When asked to choose a device, select "3Dfx Voodoo Banshee"
  84. 8) You may then be prompted to insert the Windows 95/98 Voodoo Banshee Driver Disk.
  85.    Enter the path you specified in Step 2 again.
  86. 9) Windows will copy the drivers.   Reboot the system when prompted.
  87. 10) Install DirectX 5.0

  90. Limitations
  91. -----------
  92.  
  93. Running 640x480 16 Color will run SUPERVGA.DRV or VGA.DRV.  No Voodoo Banshee 
  94. features will be used.  Switch to a different resolution or color depth.
  95. Full windowed hardware acceleration with this version of the drivers is 
  96. only possible when running at 16bpp modes.

  98. Troubleshooting

  103. Problem: After installing the card, the system still detects my old 
  104. card even though it is no longer in the system.
  105. Resolution: See Step 2 of the "Fresh Installation" instructions.
  106.  
  107. Known Issues
  108. 1) Occasionally, when exiting Unreal, you come back to a black screen. 
  109. Your system has not crashed.   (Workaround: Move the mouse around and 
  110. click to regain the desktop back again.  To gain all colors back, right 
  111. click on the desktop to and select "Properties".  Select the Tab for 
  112. "Settings".   Change from your current display resolution to some other 
  113. resolution, then click back on your setting and hit "Apply".  For 
  114. example: I am running at 800x600, I slide the bar to 640x480, then I 
  115. slide the bar back to 800x600 and click "Apply".).

  117. 2) When playing Quake/Quake2 changing resolutions after you've begun 
  118. the game may result in a crash, with the following error message, 
  119. "Server was Killed" (Workaround: Do not attempt to change resolutions, 
  120. once you've begun playing the game).

  122. Installation Procedures for the following Games:
  123.  
  124. Unreal
  125. 1)  Install Unreal.
  126. 2)  Download 2 patches.  From 3Dfiles, get "unrealpatch101.exe"  
  127. at http://www.3dfiles.com/patches/unreal.shtml.  Then go to Epic's 
  128. Unreal site at  http://unreal.epicgames.com/ and click on "Updates & 
  129. Patches" on the left and get the files entitled Version 209 Public 
  130. Beta  (UnrealBeta209.zip)
  131. 3)  Run the "unrealpatch101.exe" first by double clicking on it.  
  132. It will ask the location that Unreal was installed in.  Type it in 
  133. or browse to it's directory (e.g. C:\Unreal).
  134. 4)  Once that has completed, unzip the file "UnrealBeta209.zip" 
  135. into the directory C:\Unreal\System\ where C: is the drive you have 
  136. Unreal installed on.
  137. 5)  Start Unreal through the Start Menu>Programs>Unreal>Play 
  138. Unreal.exe and when it prompts you if you have a 3Dfx card installed, 
  139. choose "Yes".  When Unreal then tells you that "Unreal is only 
  140. compatible with Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 cards" and asks if you still 
  141. want to use your 3Dfx card, choose "Yes".
  142. 6)  Play Unreal!
  143.  
  144. Quake
  145. 1)  Install Quake.
  146. 2)  Update Quake to latest version, 1.06.  Obtain the patch 
  147. directly from iD Software, here 
  148. http://www.idsoftware.com/quake/index.html. The file is entitled 
  149. q101-106.zip
  150. 3)  Patch your current version of Quake by unzipping the file 
  151. into your Quake directory.  Overwrite any file and then run patch.exe
  152. 4)  Obtain the GLQuake exectuable and patch from 3Dfiles.com at 
  153. http://www.3dfiles.com/patches/quake.shtml.
  154. 5)  Run glq1114.exe and install all features.
  155. 6)  Play Quake!

  157. Quake2
  158. 1)  Install Quake2.
  159. 2)  Start the game.  From the menu, select Video.  For the 
  160. driver, choose 3Dfx OpenGL and hit apply.
  161. 3)  Play Quake2!

  163. Hexen2
  164. 1)  Install Hexen2.
  165. 2)  Start the game.  From the menu, select Video.  For the 
  166. driver, choose Default OpenGL and hit apply.
  167. 3)  Play Hexen2!
